Food Storage and Children
August 23, 2008 – 4:41 pmFor those who do not have kids, this really might not be of use – though you will be able to assist others in their planning! This is of course you does not apply to those who belong to the WC Fields school of dining – I love children – cooked well done!
Now that is out of the way, Food planning for disaster/emergency times is critical. Making sure you have enough can make a huge difference. In a previous post, I mentioned how much you will need for an adult for one year. Here are some guidelines for kids:
- 3 yrs and under – 50% of the adult portion
- 4 to 6 yrs – 70% of the adult portion
- 7 to 10 yrs – 90% of the adult portion
- 11 and up – 100%
Now, if you have a teenager, plan for 120% as they always seem hungry. Heck, include tree bark and other non-digestible foods to help slow them down!!!
A key to remember is to assess your food storage annually since your family is always changing. Never know when that 10 year old is now eating like a horse and you have an inlaw move in with you!
Now this week, be sure to go buy some sugar and kool-aide for your food storage to support your disaster and emergency planning. If you water is treated with chlorine or iodine, it will taste like crap, so it would be best to cover the taste somewhat.
