Staying the Course in Crisis
February 9, 2009 – 11:53 amGood Day to all!
Recently, I have been having a conversation with another person regarding giving up the city and moving to the country. The thought was that being in the country would allow the person to grow crops and raise livestock. Moreover, land can be had cheap (in some states) and gets you out of the urban environment and away from the “criminal” element.
Lets get some things straitened up!
First, unless you know how to raise livestock and have the stomach to slaughter the beast, you should not attempt this. It is messy and I have seen grown men vomit when gutting a deer. As a matter of fact, one guy I know shot a deer, and when we started gutting the thing, he got up and walked to the truck and said he would never hunt again. All because he could not handle the odor. For what it is worth, livestock guts smell pretty bad as well. On the other hand, another friend of mine had two elk to butcher a few weeks back. It took him and a friend over 12 hours to butcher and package the two elk – keep in mind, these two guys are pretty experienced in butchering. So, if you cannot process the meat yourself, don’t do it.
As for giving up and moving to the country. It is not a walk in the park. You still need a source of income to pay them taxes. So, are you planning on welfare to cover them. Most folks cannot afford to give up their jobs (or the lifestyle they have become accustomed to.) Also, there is an old saying that you get what you paid for. If you are considering a remote site, make sure you know where the water comes from (and is it clean??) and other sources of utilities. Don’t be a fool and think you can build a house out of pallets like what occurs in Mexico!
Lets talk about gangs. Just because you live in the sticks does not mean you are away from gangs. Fact is, that even out in the boonies gangs exist. You will find tags all over the place including in west Texas. What you need to do if you are considering a remote locale is discuss it with the local legal authorities and make a judgement call from there.
Lastly, there are people out there in Internetland who espouse that the world (financial) is coming to an end. Truth is that we as a world have weathered a lot worse. From a financial stanpoint, look back to the Carter administration. Hyperinflation worldwide, the middle east was going to blow up………
Step back and take a deep breath. Zig Zigler (a sales guru) once said you can respond or react. When things are under control, you respond (positive). Reaction is a negative term. For example, he had a negative reaction to the medication he was taking.
How you respond to a situation is up to you. It is not up to Congress. It is not up to your city counsel or some moron on the net spouting off you should bail out on your obligations and move to BFE and live off the land. You need to plan, store and prepare. Rarely do you see a war start off without a some planning. In survival training, the first thing you are taught is to keep your wits together.
Take time and think – your brain is your most important tool.
